Dr. Jolly is well published in the area of neurogenic heel pain, and serves as a referral center for other doctors. In a paper, which was published in 1998 in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, Dr. Jolly found that many patients, who are diagnosed with plantar fascitis, actually have entrapment of the posterior tibial nerve or one of its branches which supplies sensation to the bottom of the foot. This condition is called neurogenic heel pain. When those patients are correctly diagnosed and treated, their heel pain resolved.

There are also many other conditions that may directly cause or contribute to heel pain. Several conditions are:
Arthritis
Bone tumor
Calcaneal bursitis
Coalition/bone spur
Lower back pain/radiculopathy
Neuritis
Presence of an accessory muscle
Plantar fascial rupture
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Soft tissue mass
Stress fracture of the heel
Varicosities
