Enlargement of the bone just behind the great toe is called a bunion, and this condition can become rather uncomfortable when it is forced into a shoe. If such a deformity can't be accommodated with wider shoes, then reconstruction of the joint should be considered. There have been a vast number of different operations reported in scientific journals, which may be used to correct this deformity.
